Discovering the Quran: Who Wrote It and How It Was Revealed

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) received the revelations over a period of 23 years. During this time, he would memorize the verses and teach them to his followers. He often recited the verses aloud in public gatherings, and many people listened, memorizing them as well. This oral tradition was very important in the early days of Islam, as many people were not literate.

To ensure that the Quran was recorded accurately, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) appointed several scribes to write down the revelations as they came. Some of the most notable scribes included:

Zayd ibn Thabit: One of the most famous scribes, Zayd played a crucial role in compiling the Quran after the Prophet’s passing. He was also known for his knowledge of the Quran and the Arabic language.

The Quran was initially recorded on various materials, such as parchment, leather, bones, and palm leaves. After the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) passed away in 632 CE, the need for a written compilation became urgent, especially after many who had memorized the Quran were killed in battle.

The Collection under Abu Bakr: The first caliph, Abu Bakr, realized the importance of preserving the Quran. He tasked Zayd ibn Thabit with gathering all the written verses and comparing them with those memorized by the companions. This effort resulted in a complete manuscript, which was kept with Abu Bakr.

Standardization under Uthman: During the caliphate of Uthman ibn Affan, differences began to emerge in the recitation of the Quran among various regions. To unify the community, Uthman ordered the production of an official copy based on the manuscript collected by Abu Bakr. This standard version was then sent to different parts of the Islamic empire, and other versions were destroyed to avoid confusion.

Muslims believe that the Quran is preserved in its original form and has not been changed since the time of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). This preservation is a core belief in Islam, and many Muslims memorize the Quran, making them known as Hafiz. The oral tradition, combined with the written records, has helped keep the Quran intact through the centuries.
